How IELTS Scoring Works
IELTS awards separate band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each section is graded independently; the overall band does not determine or repair a weak section result.
The overall band is calculated by averaging the four section bands and rounding the result to the nearest half band. There are two important rounding rules: an average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band, while an average ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band.
Section bands are set from performance in that particular test. For Listening, the official reference points include:
- Band 5: an average Listening mark of 16
- Band 6: an average Listening mark of 23
- Band 7: an average Listening mark of 30
- Band 8: an average Listening mark of 35
The precise marks needed can vary slightly between test versions, so these figures are reference points rather than a guaranteed conversion table. IELTS also uses the same Reading scale for Academic and General Training, but the tests are not equivalent in difficulty. Academic Reading may use more difficult vocabulary or more complex writing, and it is usual to answer more questions correctly in General Training Reading to reach the same band.
How PTE Scoring Works
PTE Academic uses a score scale from 10 to 90, with 90 as the highest possible score. Unlike IELTS, it is not a half-band scale. Pearson reports an overall score, individual scores for communicative skills and a Skills Profile, with scores graded against the Global Scale of English.
Its published score bands are:
- 85–90
- 76–84
- 59–75
- 43–58
- 30–42
- 10–29
Pearson explicitly gives the following CEFR equivalents:
- 76–84: C1, described as a very high level of English proficiency that is generally not required for undergraduate courses
- 59–75: B2
- 43–58: B1
The cited Pearson scoring guidance does not attach CEFR labels to the 85–90, 30–42 or 10–29 bands, so those ranges should not be assigned an equivalent from this guide.
A PTE score report is therefore not a single interchangeable number. Admissions staff can see the overall result and the individual skill scores, allowing a university to apply separate minimums to each part of the profile.
How Australian Universities Word English Requirements
Study Australia states that academic entry requirements, including the required English level, vary by course. The practical approach is to read the exact course page rather than relying only on a general university-wide score.
First, identify the precise degree and study level. Adelaide University states that its minimum English requirement for an undergraduate program is an IELTS Academic overall score of 6.0 or equivalent, but the exact requirement depends on the degree and some degrees have higher requirements.
Next, split the published requirement into two separate checks: the minimum overall score and the minimum for every section. For bachelor degrees, Victoria University requires an IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0, or a PTE overall score of at least 52 with no section score less than 52.
Then repeat the process for postgraduate study. For master’s degrees, Victoria University requires an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0, or a PTE overall score of at least 60 with no section score less than 52.
These examples show why “IELTS 6.5” or “PTE 60” is not a complete description of an entry requirement. Under Victoria University’s master’s requirement, the overall result and every component minimum must be checked separately.
Finally, check whether the provider requires any additional application information and whether it has assessed your complete application. Victoria University says some courses may request supporting information, while Study Australia advises applicants to read the provider’s course requirements carefully and contact the provider directly if more information is needed.
Why a High Overall Score Can Still Miss the Requirement
The most common mistake is treating the overall score as if it replaces the section floor. It does not. A university’s wording contains two separate gates, and reaching the first gate does not excuse a result that fails the second.
For example, an IELTS overall score of 6.5 does not satisfy Victoria University’s master’s requirement if any band is less than 6.0. Similarly, a PTE overall score of 60 does not satisfy the same university’s PTE requirement if any section score is less than 52.
One strong section cannot compensate for another section below the stated minimum. Before sending a result, check the overall threshold first, then compare every IELTS band or PTE section score with the corresponding floor.
What to Do If You Are Below the Requirement
Adelaide University states that an applicant can still apply without meeting the minimum English requirement. If the applicant meets the academic eligibility requirements, Adelaide University may send a conditional offer packaged with an English language preparatory program from its English Language Centre. This is a possible route, not an automatic admission outcome.
In some cases, Adelaide University also allows minimum language requirements to be demonstrated through previous academic qualifications, such as a Diploma completed in Australia, or through practical use of English in a professional environment. The application must include certified documentation from the educational institution or employer confirming that the language of instruction or employment was English.
These alternatives should be checked with the university before they are treated as a completed evidence route. The qualification or employment evidence must fit Adelaide University’s rules and be accompanied by the required certification.
What Happens If You Switch From IELTS to PTE?
Switching tests does not remove the separate section checks. PTE produces an overall score and individual skill scores, so a PTE-based university requirement applies to the whole PTE profile rather than only its total.
The available requirements do not confirm that an IELTS section can be transferred to PTE, that separate PTE sittings can be combined, or that only the weakest skill must be re-sat. Do not build an application strategy on any of those assumptions. Plan to meet every section floor in an accepted score report, and ask admissions in writing if you need clarification about combining results or using more than one test report.
Frequently asked questions
Does meeting the English requirement guarantee a place?
No. Adelaide University states that proof of English proficiency, even when combined with academic entry requirements, does not guarantee a place. Applications are considered individually, and selection is competitive.
How recent must an English test be for Adelaide University?
Adelaide University accepts IELTS or PTE results taken within the last two years before admission. This is Adelaide University’s stated timing rule, so applicants should still check the requirements for their chosen degree.
Do I need to send a paper PTE report?
Pearson says PTE scores are digital and can be shared securely with as many institutions as the applicant chooses, free of charge. A paper copy is not needed.
What additional information might Victoria University request?
Victoria University says some courses may require proof of work experience, a portfolio or folio, a police check or working with children check from the applicant’s country of residence, or a supplementary information form. These documents may be additional to the academic and English-language requirements.
How long does Pearson take to issue PTE results?
Pearson says the score report is typically sent within 48 hours after the test is completed. This is Pearson’s score-report timing, not a processing time for an Australian university application.
